Former barrister and currently a young, up and coming food and hospitality extraordinaire, Sophie is making waves in the food scene with Bird on a Wire and Box of Bird – known for creating food that is nutritionally and ethically guilt free. It is no surprise they have developed strong local followings at their stores in Ponsonby and the CBD. Watch out for their new opening on Elliot Street!
1. Most memorable show/event/concert and why?
Beyoncé was pretty awesome last year, that woman's talent, commitment and sequins blew my mind!
2. You have $50 in your pocket on a Friday night out – where would you go?
Definitely to a restaurant - perhaps a snack and a glass of wine at Depot then off to watch some comedy at The Classic, I LOVE stand up!
3. If you were to produce/create a show, what would it be about?
I'm really interested in sustainability and recent literature that is backing up businesses doing 'the right thing'. Our business made a massive commitment to operating as sustainably as we can from the outset and it's certainly cost us a bit more than the alternative, but the likes of Richard Branson & Jochen Zeitz's 'B-Team' and Ariana Huffington's 'Third Metric' are telling us that we'll actually be more profitable in the long run for placing an emphasis on the well being of our people, our community & our planet - a much better definition of success! It would be cool to make a show that follows a business as it shifts its principles, even reluctantly, from the traditional focus on money and power alone, to including sustainability, and what happens!
4. Favourite piece of art/object/rock?
Can I say my engagement ring? It's new!
5. One sentence to describe the arts, culture, and events scene in Auckland?
It's impressive and plentiful and varied, and under-tapped - I'm always telling myself off for not seeing more!
6. Favourite chicken joke?
Appropriate for this series... Which day of the week do chickens hate most? ... Fry-day. BOOM!
